Florida is home to a great number of vehicles, all in need of a mechanic at some point or another. Perhaps it’s time for you to step in and take over that role. If you’ve got a good idea about what’s going on with cars, or if you just have a passion for that, getting an education as a mechanic might be a great idea. Florida hosts a number of opportunities for you to do that, and you can even branch out to online courses so that you have a greater flexibility for training. While you can get a job without a formal education, the likelihood of that is severely decreased.
Once you have chosen some sort of school to go to, the next step in your decision is to find out if the school is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation. This is the group that is responsible for setting the rules for mechanics courses. They make sure that you are in fact getting a sound education in all regards. Part of this education might include math, English, and other basic courses, but that is just to ensure that you are a well rounded student.
Florida Mechanic & Vocational Job Outlook and Salary
In terms of the job availability for the coming years, you should find a great number of positions out there. The fact is that there are very few people actually working in the field, and workers are dropping like flies because of retirement. You have the opportunity to fill some of those positions after you get a sound education. Based on data predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there should be a 5% growth in this career for the coming year. That number may not be as high as it is in some job fields, but a continuing shortage of employees should make it easy for you to find work.
As far as how much you will make as a mechanic, that will largely depend on the seniority you hold in the career place. You will get expected raises as always, but people will also begin to trust your work more and will therefore allow you to make more money. On average, a mechanic in 2009 saw earnings of $16.88 per hour, but there were numbers below $10 an hour. That was mainly for entry level positions though, so there is hope for you to make in the twenties even.
