In terms of the job availability for the coming years, you should find a great number of positions out there. The fact is that there are very few people actually working in the field, and workers are dropping like flies because of retirement. You have the opportunity to fill some of those positions after you get a sound education. Based on data predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there should be a 5% growth in this career for the coming year. That number may not be as high as it is in some job fields, but a continuing shortage of employees should make it easy for you to find work.
As far as how much you will make as a mechanic, that will largely depend on the seniority you hold in the career place. You will get expected raises as always, but people will also begin to trust your work more and will therefore allow you to make more money. On average, a mechanic in 2009 saw earnings of $16.88 per hour, but there were numbers below $10 an hour. That was mainly for entry level positions though, so there is hope for you to make in the twenties even.
